Stress urinary incontinence is the involuntary loss of urine associated with coughing, sneezing, laughing and exercising (including sexual activity). It is caused by a weakening of the vaginal muscles as well as damage to the tissues (facis) or ligaments supporting the bladder. Stress urinary incontinence is often the result of vaginal (also called pelvic) relaxation stemming from childbirth, aging or trauma. Approximately 60 percent of women with incontinence suffer from this type. If you want to perform a self test, here are two methods to try: - Lie down and, with legs apart, cough. This will produce a visible spurt of urine if stress incontinence is the problem.
- Stand up with one leg on a stool and hold a paper towel over your perineum (the area between the vagina and the anus). See a wet stain on the towel? This is another sign of stress incontinence.
